MINDSCAPE
Landscapes of the Mind
"MINDSCAPE was inspired by my many journeys between Dublin and Offaly while working on various projects and exhibitions over the years. During these drives, I became captivated by the sunsets—watching the colours shift and imagining how I might recreate them in paint. The most breathtaking moments often forced me to pull over and capture them.
Over time, I began developing a technique to translate these fleeting scenes. This work introduced a key difference from my earlier practice. In previous paintings, the light source would come from higher in the composition, often within darker or evening skies. Here, the setting sun became the primary light source, radiating from the horizon.
To accommodate this, I turned the canvas upside down, allowing the light to be built upward through the painting. Initially, these works were intended simply as landscapes—spaces where viewers could become immersed and find a sense of calm or meditation.
During an exhibition, I turned one of the paintings upside down while showing it to a friend. She remarked that it looked like a planet viewed from space.
From that moment, Mindscape was born.
Each painting can be experienced in two ways. One way up, they appear as landscapes—sunsets that ground us in the earth. Turned, they become planetary forms, as if the viewer has been lifted into the cosmos, looking back at the world from a distance.
The series reflects both perspectives—reminding us of our connection to the land beneath us, while also placing us within a shared planet, united as part of something much greater."
